Thiazolidinediones (TZDs / Glitazones)
Thiazolidinediones (TZDs), also known as glitazones, are a class of oral diabetes medications that improve insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetes. Pioglitazone is the most commonly used TZD currently available in the United States.
Mechanism of Action
TZDs activate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-gamma), a nuclear receptor that regulates genes involved in glucose and lipid metabolism. This activation increases insulin sensitivity in muscle, fat, and liver tissue, reducing insulin resistance and improving blood sugar control.
