How Each Drug Works

Celecoxib

Celecoxib has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties. The mechanism of action of celecoxib capsules are believed to be due to inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis, primarily via inhibition of COX-2. Celecoxib is a potent inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis in vitro. Celecoxib concentrations reached during therapy have produced in vivo effects. Prostaglandins sensitize afferent nerves and potentiate the action of bradykinin in inducing pain in animal m…

Naproxen

Naproxen has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties. The mechanism of action of naproxen, like that of other NSAIDs, is not completely understood but involves inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2). Naproxen is a potent inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis in vitro. Naproxen concentrations reached during therapy have produced in vivo effects. Prostaglandins sensitize afferent nerves and potentiate the action of bradykinin in inducing pain in ani…

Cost Comparison

Celecoxib

$150–$400/month

Since Celecoxib is available as a generic, comparing prices at different pharmacies and using discount cards like GoodRx can significantly reduce your out-of-pocket cost. Some manufacturers also offer patient assistance programs for those who qualify.

Naproxen

$4–$25/month

Naproxen is widely available as an affordable generic. Using discount cards like GoodRx can further reduce the cost, often bringing it to under $10 per month.

Drug Interaction: Moderate

Concomitant use of celecoxib and naproxen, both non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), significantly increases the risk of gastrointestinal adverse events, including ulcers, bleeding, and perforation, as well as renal toxicity and cardiovascular events. There is no evidence of increased efficacy with this combination compared to monotherapy with either drug.

Mechanism: Both celecoxib (a selective COX-2 inhibitor) and naproxen (a non-selective COX inhibitor) exert their therapeutic and adverse effects by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. Concurrent administration leads to an additive pharmacological effect, increasing the suppression of protective prostaglandins in the gastrointestinal tract and kidneys, and potentially increasing prothrombotic effects.
