Midazolam, a benzodiazepine, enhances the inhibitory effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at GABA-A receptors, also resulting in CNS depression. The synergistic CNS depressant effects of both drugs significantly increase the risk of respiratory depression and profound sedation.
