Drug Class18 Medications

Antiplatelet Agents

Antiplatelet agents prevent platelets from clumping together to form blood clots. They are used to prevent heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots in patients with cardiovascular disease, coronary artery disease, or those who have had stents placed.

Mechanism of Action

Antiplatelet drugs work through different mechanisms: clopidogrel, ticagrelor, and prasugrel block the P2Y12 ADP receptor on platelets; aspirin irreversibly inhibits COX-1 and COX-2, reducing thromboxane A2 production; dipyridamole inhibits phosphodiesterase, increasing cAMP in platelets.
