Drug Class13 Medications

Fluoroquinolones

Fluoroquinolones are a class of broad-spectrum antibiotics used to treat serious bacterial infections including respiratory, urinary tract, and skin infections. They are reserved for moderate-to-severe infections due to their side effect profile.

Mechanism of Action

Fluoroquinolones work by stopping bacteria from growing and multiplying. They do this by blocking two important enzymes inside bacteria called DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. These enzymes are crucial for bacteria to copy their genetic material and repair themselves. By blocking these enzymes, fluoroquinolones damage the bacteria's DNA, which ultimately kills the bacteria or stops them from spreading. This targeted action makes them effective against a wide range of bacterial infections.

Clinical Uses

Fluoroquinolones are powerful antibiotics used to treat many types of bacterial infections, especially when other antibiotics might not work or are not tolerated. They are commonly prescribed for serious infections like pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and certain types of diarrhea. Specific fluoroquinolones are also used for eye and ear infections. They are often reserved for more severe infections due to potential side effects.

Side Effects & Safety

Common side effects of fluoroquinolones can include nausea, diarrhea, headache, and dizziness. More serious, but less common, side effects can affect tendons (leading to tendonitis or rupture), nerves (causing numbness or tingling), and mental health (like anxiety or confusion). These drugs carry a Black Box Warning from the FDA due to the risk of serious side effects, including tendon rupture, nerve damage, and worsening of myasthenia gravis, which means they should be used with caution and only when necessary.
