Penicillins
Penicillins are one of the oldest and most widely used classes of antibiotics. They are used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including strep throat, pneumonia, skin infections, and urinary tract infections.
Mechanism of Action
Penicillins work by attacking the cell walls of bacteria. They do this by blocking certain proteins (called penicillin-binding proteins or PBPs) that bacteria need to build and repair their cell walls. When the cell wall is weakened, the bacteria can't survive and eventually burst open and die. This action makes penicillins effective at killing bacteria and stopping infections.
Clinical Uses
Penicillins are widely used to treat many types of bacterial infections. They are commonly prescribed for infections of the skin, ears, throat, and urinary tract, as well as pneumonia and bronchitis. They are also used for more serious conditions like meningitis and sepsis. This class is particularly effective against many common bacteria, making them a go-to choice for various patient populations, including children and adults.
Side Effects & Safety
The most common side effects of penicillins include upset stomach, diarrhea, and skin rashes. A more serious, but less common, side effect is an allergic reaction, which can range from a mild rash to a severe, life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis. Patients should always tell their doctor if they have ever had an allergic reaction to penicillin or any other antibiotic.
