SGLT2 Inhibitors (Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitors)

SGLT2 inhibitors are oral diabetes medications that lower blood sugar by causing the kidneys to remove glucose from the body through urine. They also have significant cardiovascular and kidney-protective benefits.

Mechanism of Action

SGLT2 inhibitors block the SGLT2 protein in the kidneys, which is responsible for reabsorbing most of the glucose filtered by the kidneys. By blocking this transporter, they cause excess glucose to be excreted in the urine, lowering blood sugar levels.
