Thyroid Hormones
Thyroid hormone replacements are synthetic versions of the hormones produced by the thyroid gland. They are used to treat hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer, and to suppress TSH in certain thyroid conditions.
Mechanism of Action
Levothyroxine (T4) is converted to the active form triiodothyronine (T3) in peripheral tissues. T3 binds to nuclear thyroid hormone receptors and regulates gene transcription, controlling metabolism, growth, and development.
Clinical Uses
Used for hypothyroidism, thyroid cancer (TSH suppression), myxedema coma, goiter, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
Side Effects & Safety
Side effects from excess dosing include palpitations, tachycardia, tremor, weight loss, insomnia, heat intolerance, and excessive sweating.
