Also known as: Glucophage, Glucophage XR, Glumetza, Fortamet, Riomet
Metformin (Glucophage) is the first-line oral medication for type 2 diabetes in adults and children aged 10 and older. It lowers blood sugar by reducing the liver's glucose output, improving insulin sensitivity in muscle and fat tissue, and mildly slowing intestinal glucose absorption — without causing weight gain or hypoglycemia on its own. It is available as an inexpensive generic and costs as little as $4–$15 per month.Metformin has 1 documented drug interaction in our database, including 0 contraindicated, 0 major, 0 moderate, and 1 minor interactions.

NSAIDs may slightly reduce metformin's renal clearance and increase the risk of lactic acidosis in patients with renal impairment.

Clinical Management
Use with caution in patients with renal impairment. Monitor renal function. Use acetaminophen as an alternative when possible.
